European Cups: Legia Warsaw is the best team after the 5th matchday of the Group Stage

According to the ECRS, after the 5th matchday of the Group Stage Legia Warsaw* (Poland) are still at the top of the table with 283,54 points, even having lost 0-1 the latest match against Lokeren (Belgium).
Also the team at the second place didn't change: Dynamo Moscow (Russia) won 2-1 against Panathinaikos (Greece) and they are getting closer to Legia, at 277,70 points.
At the third place, with 265,32 points, we find Porto (Portugal), which is also the best team that participate in the Champions League.

The worst team still in the competition is Galatasaray (Turkey), who are third to last, with only 6,36 points.

The complete ranking is here.

* Please note: Legia Warsaw was punished by UEFA for fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 second leg's win over Celtic in the third qualifying round. I decided to consider it as a 0-3 lost, as stated by the official UEFA sentence.

Goal timing in 6 European Leagues

This table shows the distribution of the goals scored this season in the 6 main European leagues.
I have divided the matches in 15 minutes segments, but I decided to separate the goals scored in the injury time after the 90th minute, to get a more balanced result (otherwise too many goals seemed to be scored between the 75th and the 90th).
The goals scored in the first half injury time are counted inside the "31-45" segment, but they shouldn't be too many and don't shift the distribution.
The green cells indicate the highest percentage (for that nation), while the red cells are the lowest.

Nation 1-15 16-30 31-45 46-60 61-75 76-90 >90 Total of goals
England 13,85% 14,46% 14,46% 15,08% 19,08% 18,15% 4,92% 325
France 12,07% 12,69% 17,96% 16,72% 17,96% 18,27% 4,33% 323
Germany 14,68% 13,65% 17,06% 17,41% 15,36% 18,77% 3,07% 293
Italy 13,07% 17,97% 18,30% 14,05% 15,69% 17,32% 3,59% 306
Portugal 13,97% 13,97% 14,85% 17,03% 17,90% 19,21% 3,06% 229
Spain 11,88% 12,19% 20,63% 14,06% 16,88% 18,44% 5,94% 320

It is clear that most of the goals are scored in the last 15 minutes of the two halves of the match. Very few are scored in the first 15 minutes.
A good percentage of goals are scored in the injury time, especially in Spain and England.

Goal timing in the English Premier League

Clicking the image above you can see a data visualization on the timing of goals in the English Premier League in this season, considering segments of 15 minutes each.

At this moment, before the 12th matchday, 22,59% of the goals were scored in the last 15 minutes, and 42,19% in the last 30 (always including the injury time).

The record of goals scored in one segment belongs to Manchester City, who so far scored 8 times in the last 15 minutes (including the injury time).
Aston Villa never scored in the last 30 minutes, as Newcastle in the first 30.

In the visualization you will find the charts about goals scored, goals conceded, the difference (scored - conceded) and the sum (scored + conceded) of goals for each team and each segment.

The importance of scoring first

I checked the last five seasons in the main 6 European leagues (England, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain) to see how strong is the correlation between the points made and a score linked to the number of times that a team scored first in a match.

To calculate this second score, that I call "First to score efficiency", I gave 1 point for a match where the team scored first, 0,5 points for a match ended 0-0, and then I calculate (score + (n° of matchdays)) / (n° of matchdays * 2).

For example, for the English Premier League, the formula is (score + 38) / 76.
This score thus goes from a minimum of 0,5 (if the team never scored the first goal of the match) to a maximum of 1 (if the team scored the first goal in all the matches).

At this link you can see an interactive chart about it.

These are the correlations:

They are almost all in the same range (0,80-0,93), with few exceptions.
The most remarkable is the German 2010-2011 season, with a correlation of only 0,6621.
In that season there were some teams that had very different results between the "First to score efficiency" and the number of points made. In particular:
Mainz scored first in only 13 matches (out of 34), but ended 5th in the league: they won 7 games after that the opponent scored first;
- three teams won less than 50% of the matches they scored first in: Hoffenheim won 8 out of 20, Wolfsburg 8 out of 17, Moenchengladbach 9 out of 19. All these three teams had an efficiency score around 0.80 (quite high), but ended respectively at the 11th, 15th and 16th place in the table.

The highest correlation overall (0,9605) is the one of Barcelona in 2009/2010, when they had an efficiency score of 35 (out of 38), scoring 99 points.
The lowest (0,6083) is the one of last season's Paços de Ferreira: they had an efficiency score of only 6.5 (out of 30), however scoring 24 points at the end of the season.

The longest streak belongs to, again, 2009-2010's Barcelona, with a series of 14 matches where they scored first (from the 8th to the 21st matchday). Counting also the 0-0 draws, the streak stretches to 21 matches (from 1st to 21st) without conceding the first goal to the opponent.

In particolare:

Domestic ranking as of 13 November 2014

I made the first ranking of this season according to the Domestic Leagues Ranking System.
As explained in the linked post, this system takes into account the matches played in the 10 main European leagues, with the points made, the goals scored and conceded by each team, and the strength of the league.

These are the best ten teams as of today:

You find the complete ranking and the legend here.

Domestic Leagues Ranking System

I created a system to evaluate the performances of the European teams in their own domestic leagues.
I take the average points made (PpG), average goals scored (AGS) and average goals conceded (AGC), calculating this formula: PpG + (AGS-AGC)/2,5
This score is then multiplied by 1,5.

To consider also the strength of each league, I multiply the result by two coefficients:
1) The external coefficient is the national coefficient (NC), that is based on the performances of the teams in the UEFA Cups in the last three years. The system to calculate the NC is explained on this post.
2) The internal coefficient is calculated considering, for each season, the 25th and 75th percentile of the points made per single game by all the teams. These two numbers are the points per game needed by a team to be, respectively, in the top 75% or in the top 25% of the table; therefore they are (roughly) the points needed to avoid the relegation or to partecipate in the Europa League. Then these two values are divided by the number of matches played in that league, and multiplied to obtain only one number.

The final score is then equal to (team's score) * (external coefficient) * (internal coefficient)

A team gets a final bonus of 2% if they are at the first position of the league.

Example
Let’s see how to calculate the score of Liverpool, as of today 9 November 2014.
Liverpool played 11 matches in the Premier League, gaining 14 points, scoring 14 goals and conceding 15.
The result of PpG + (AGS-AGC)/2,5 formula is ~1,236.
This is then multiplied by 1,5 obtaining a score of ~1,85.

The strength of the Premier League is calculated as follows.
The external coefficient of England is 47,38 (it takes into account the results of the English clubs in the European Cups in the last three seasons, as explained in this post).
To calculate the internal coefficient, I calculate the 25th and 75th percentile of the points per game made in the Premier League in the last three seasons, which are respectively ~1,031 and ~1,805. They are multiplied to obtain the internal coefficient of the English Premier League, which is ~1,86.
The external and internal coefficients are multiplied to obtain the final coefficient of the Premier League: 47,38 * ~1,86 = ~88,14.

The score of Liverpool at this point of the season is then ~1,85 * ~88,14 = 163,46 (rounded).

Of course, the league coefficients (both external and internal) are set at the beginning of the season and they won’t change, since they are calculated on the results of the previous three years.
On the contrary, the score of each team changes every match they play.

If it happens that there is at least one team with a negative score, I adjust the points of all teams in this way: the best score remains unchanged, while the worst is converted to 1, and all the other scores are adjusted proportionally. In this way, the worst teams gain more points in the ranking, while the best teams gain few points (the first team gains no points).
In any case, the positions in the ranking don't change.
This is the formula to make the adjustment (TS = team score, BS = best score, WS = worst score): TS + ((1-WS)/(BS-WS))*(BS-TS).

European Cups: Legia Warsaw is the best team after the fourth matchday of the Group Stage

According to the ECRS, after the 4th matchday of the Group Stage Legia Warsaw* (Poland) are still at the top of the table; after the elimination from the Champions League, they won all the four matches played in the Europa League group, reaching a total of 286,57 points.
The second team is Dynamo Moscow (Russia) with a score or 247,97, and the third is Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) with 242,78 points.

The best team in the Champions League is Porto (Portugal), which is 4th overall with a score of 231,16.

The worst team still in the competition is Galatasaray (Turkey), who after having lost 0-4 and 1-4 against Borussia Dortmund fell to the 233th position (out of 239), with 11,89 points.

All the big teams are still far from the top positions, having entered the competitions only in the Group Stage: the best of the top European teams is Borussia Dortmund, who are 40th with 140,65 points.

The complete ranking is here.

* Please note: Legia Warsaw was punished by UEFA for fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 second leg's win over Celtic in the third qualifying round. I decided to consider it as a 0-3 lost, as stated by the official UEFA sentence.

The numbers of the Champions League - 4th matchday of the Group Stage

50 goals were scored in the 4th matchday of the group Stage, 9 goals less than the 3rd matchday but still a greater amount than the average (43,2) of the goals scored in the Group Stage matchdays since when 32 teams take part in this round (1999-2000 season).

Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) won 5-0 against BATE Borisov (Belarus) , after having won 7-0 against them in the 3rd matchday. For the first time in the history of the Champions League's Group Stage, a team won two games against the same opponent with an aggregate difference of 12 goals. This result also equals the absolute record for the Champions League, already reached by MFK Kosice (first qualifying round in 1998-1999) and FC Copenhagen (second qualifying round in 2009-2010).

The previous record in such an advanced round, 11 goals, was set in 2008-2009 by Bayern Munich, who won 7-1 and 5-0 against Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16.
Considering also the European Cup, the absolute record is an 18-goal difference in the preliminary round of 1965-1966 season, when Benfica beat Stade Dudelange 8-0 and 10-0.

The match between Shakhtar Donetsk and BATE Borisov was the 6th in the history of the Champions League between teams of Ukraine and Belarus. Belarusian clubs never won: the balance sheet sees 5 wins for Ukrainian teams, 1 draw, 23 goals scored by Ukrainian teams and 4 scored by Belarusian ones.
